Heather Calderbank 2017 @ RISE 19 Water Lane Wilmslow SK9 5AE
"I am both beguiled and frustrated by oil paint. It is an adversary, a constant itch. For myself the qualities of the paint are as important as, and must be, the symbolic expression of the subject matter."
Sigmund Freud named the skin as the site the Ego; ie, the place of negotiation between the primal private Id, and the social outside, the Superego. It is this symbolic dynamic, that informs and inspires my images of the human body, where skin, like paint, defies its materiality.
As contrast, discipline, and practice, I also make enjoyable and challenging offshoots into the wider subject matters of abstraction, landscape, and portraiture.
Heather Calderbanks' oil paintings are generally oil on board, sometimes canvas. and vary in size.
